This paper reviews in brief the most important and recent findings about nitric oxide and its role in the normal human physiology and disease. The formation of this gas and its role in the cardiovascular, nervous, urogenital, gastrointestinal, respiratory and gynecological systems and the role of NO in inflammation are discussed. The potential diagnostic and therapeutical uses in many clinical situations are also discussed.
