The critical dependence of the organism on iron leads it to develop elaborate mechanisms of iron absorption, transport, cellular uptake, storage and conservation.

The advances in the knowledge of human iron metabolism over the last decade are mostly due to new knowledge in molecular and cellular biology obtained particularly from recombinant DNA technology.

The aim of this article is to show the recent advances in knowledge of human iron metabolism.
